Breast Reduction

Large, heavy breasts can often cause significant back, neck and shoulder pain. Beyond discomfort, large breasts can also make exercise and other physical activity difficult and awkward. Breast reduction surgery can provide relief from these symptoms and has the added benefit of refining the breast shape and overall body proportions.

FAQs

How is a breast reduction performed?

Excess fat, glandular tissue and skin are removed primarily from the lower and lateral portions of the breast, but the technical details of the operation are modified to suit each individual.

Will my breast shape change?

Yes. Most breast reductions incorporate a breast lift as part of the procedure and care is taken to create the most attractive breast shape possible.

What technique does Dr. Loizides use?

Dr. Loizides uses a variety of breast reduction techniques that facilitate the individualized treatment of each patient.  As part of your consultation, Dr. Loizides will suggest which surgical technique suits you best.

What is the role of liposuction? And will I need it?

Depending on your breast shape and fat distribution, liposuction can be very helpful in improving the aesthetic outcome of your surgery. It is used to remove excess fat from the side of the chest and the armpit area, which are not addressed by a breast reduction alone. For these reasons, liposuction is commonly performed at the same time as a breast reduction.

Describe the initial phase of the recover?

The incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures underneath the skin. Your breasts are then covered with a dressing and your compression bra. As you wake up in the recovery room, local anesthetic used during the operation will help to ensure you are comfortable. You are typically discharged the day of your surgery. Once at home, you do not have to change your bandages. Dr. Loizides will help you with the first dressing change at a followup appointment three to five days following your surgery.

When can I resume exercise and return to work?

The recovery process varies from person to person, but most patients require two weeks off work and many patients appreciate a third week off if possible. Typically, low impact exercise can be resumed after two weeks. All other activities can gradually be resumed after four weeks.

If you suffer from any of the following, you may be a good candidate for a breast reduction:

  • Back, neck and shoulder pain due to heavy breasts

  • Indentations in your shoulders from tight bra straps

  • Skin irritation underneath your breasts

  • Difficulty exercising due to the size of your breasts

  • Significant breast asymmetry

  • Self-consciousness due to breast size
