Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed aesthetic surgeries. Breast augmentations are typically performed as an outpatient procedure at a private surgical facility. Most patients that undergo breast augmentation can expect to return to work in two to three weeks and resume normal physical activities within six weeks. When considering a breast augmentation there are several important points to discuss with your plastic surgeon.

  • What size of implant will be used?

  • What other implant characteristics must be considered?

  • Where will the implant be placed above or below the pectoral muscle?

  • Where will the incision (and subsequent scar) be located?

  • Will a breast lift also be required?

These considerations will vary between individual patients. A consultation with Dr. Loizides will address the above in detail to develop a surgical plan to achieve your desired outcome.

FAQS

How is a breast augmentation performed?

An implant is inserted into the breast to increase volume.  Typically a smooth round silicone gel implant is placed below or above the pectoral muscle through a small incision in the lower fold of the breast. The technical details of the operation are modified to suit each individual.

How much larger will my breast be?

This is fully dependent on the size of the implants used.  We determine implant size after a thorough discussion of your goals and a tailored physical examination.  To help with the process, you will place custom sizers in a bra to simulate the appearance of the breasts with different implant sizes.

Describe the initial phase of recovery?

The incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures underneath the skin. Your breasts are then covered with a dressing and your compression bra. As you wake up in the recovery room, local anesthetic used during the operation will help to ensure you are comfortable. You are typically discharged the day of your surgery. Once at home, you do not have to change your bandages. Dr. Loizides will help you with the first dressing change at a followup appointment three to five days following your surgery.  The breasts have to stay dry until that point.

When can I resume exercise and return to work?

The recovery process varies from person to person, but most patients require one to two weeks off work. Typically, low impact exercise can be resumed after two weeks. All other activities can gradually be resumed after six weeks.
